How I installed and tweaked DiscussionWall

If there are any other first-time web part newbies out there, this may help.

Installing on Sharepoint 2010.

I logged in to the server using the farm administrator login and launched the PowerShell with "Run as Administrator". Very important.

At the PowerShell prompt:

add-SPsolution " D:\Plugins\Facebook appearance Discussion List\httpsharepointfx.codeplex.comreleasesview66837\SAF_CommunityDiscussionWall(1).wsp"

then:

Install-SPSolution -Identity "SAF_CommunityDiscussionWall(1).wsp" -WebApplication http://yoursitehere -GACDeployment

It only worked at the top-level site, not the subsite.

Then I checked Central Admin: http://yoursitehere:50000/_admin/Solutions.aspx to make sure it showed "deployed".

Then I went to the "front end" and used http://yoursitehere/_layouts/ManageFeatures.aspx?Scope=Site.  Scroll down to find Discussion Wall and activate the web part.

Summarizing:

  • Login to server as farm owner
  • Open Powershell as Administrator
  • install web part
  • deploy web part
  • activate web part

I still could not use the web part, because of this error:

Could not load file or assembly 'AjaxControlToolkit, Version=3.0.30512.20315, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=28f01b0e84b6d53e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

To fix, I got AjaxControlToolkit.  Didn't know if I needed the 3.5 .Net version or the 4.0 .Net version, so I looked in the registry (regedit.exe) under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup.  It turned out I needed 3.5

I downloaded the file from http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/2732 and unzipped it in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\bin.

Now it works.

I replaced the images in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\IMAGES\DiscussionWall because they were really grainy.  I'd actually advise doing this early, so you don't have to clear the old ones out of your cache.
